I am so excited for this month because it is all about WORK! Now, I know sometimes we love our jobs, sometimes work is not our favorite subject, but most of us can agree that having a source of income is important for our survival. Despite your opinions about your current job/role, we are going to be all about dressing as if you LOVE your job over the next few weeks. I am so excited about this series because (1) It will help me feel out if you all like series more or simply me sharing my looks, and (2) It gives me something to focus on as a blogger and someone who wants to educate and empower my followers. Believe it or not, a lot of work goes into what I share with you all, so when you come here, I want it to be worth your time!

This series will begin with me helping you understand the basics of Building a wardrobe for work. This week we will cover:

  1. When and Why you need to build a wardrobe for work

Simply put, because you work. Okay, thats a little vague, but reality is if you are interested in this series it is because you wear clothes to work. Some of the signs for needing to build a wardrobe for work include but are not limited to: (a) Starting a new job, (b) Promotion, (c) Change in weight (d) Office culture shift, (e) Change in weather. Now this is not an exhaustive list, but these are some of the main reasons some of you have shared with me. If you are beginning a new job or role (promotion) it is important to look the part. As much as we do not always want to admit it, we judge people based on appearance. I know for a fact, I am judged on my appearance because I am “Fashion with Care.” If you are starting a new job or role it is important not to come in with a style and dramatically change that style later on. Be consistent as it says something about you. You should dress the way you want to be recognized and treated, especially at work (in my opinion).

You need to build a work wardrobe, because it builds a personality for you, and if you are anything like me, it builds a confidence as well. Owning a style helps you own your work, and decisions which in turn makes you better at what you do. Have you ever heard the saying, “You feel better, if you look better” or “I don’t look like what I’ve been through,” for my churchy folks. Well those can be true, especially for women. Not to say all women are the same, but speaking for me and my close friends, we all enjoy having a confidence that matches our style. Someone asking me about my clothes or stopping to give me a compliment is a booster for me and my self esteem, which in turn helps my productivity throughout the day.

Building a work wardrobe also helps you take control of your time. If you have a defined style, and a section of clothing dedicated to work it is easier to put together looks and it helps you save on spending your personal time on work. “Yes, I count getting out my clothes for work, investing in my work.” Building a wardrobe for work makes your life so much simpler when it comes to getting dressed. You and those around you will also know what to expect from you. You won’t be the person that dresses up only on meeting days and gets all the looks, then you’re right back to being ignored the next day because you threw something together. (Although, throwing together looks from a built work wardrobe can work, lol).

When you need to build a work wardrobe

I am going to break this down as simply as I can. Whenever you feel like you do not have anything to wear to work. This is simple, much like when you’re invited to an event and you have nothing to wear so you go and buy something, work is the same way. You should build a work wardrobe when the occasion calls for it. If you are in an office where everyone wears business attire, and you always end up wearing casual clothes, thats a good time to begin building a wardrobe for work. You need to build a wardrobe for work when ever your mood shifts about your job, that can be positive or challenging. If you are excited about your job and the work you do, that needs to show in the way you are dressing. If you are feeling challenged in your work, you need to dress as if the challenges are not overwhelming you. It is safe to say you should build a work wardrobe when you constantly have nothing to wear.

Building a wardrobe of any type can be overwhelming. One of the keys to successfully completing this process is to mentally prepare. I have created 5 questions you should ask yourself before deciding to build a wardrobe for work to help you mentally prepare for this task. Often times we have these great ideas for change but have not put ourselves in a position to do it effectively. Here are the first 2 questions to ask yourself before deciding to build a wardrobe

3.Whats in your closet

Doing an inventory of your closet before building is foundational. This helps you to avoid overspending, duplicating pieces, and creating a less functional wardrobe. Knowing whats in your closet will also help you determine if your current work style truly matches your office culture. Grab your copy of the How to build a wardrobe for work workbook and write out the pieces in your closet that you currently wear to work or are considering wearing to work. Putting them on paper will help you through this process more than you know.
